Position Words

Where is the cat? It could be on the chair, under the table, in the box, or behind the door. Each of those little words — on, under, in, behind — tells us the position of the cat. These are prepositions. They are tiny words, but they do a big job: they tell us where things are and when things happen.

A preposition is a small word that tells us where or when something is.
