The Building Blocks of Every Sentence

Imagine a city built from only a few types of blocks: bricks, glass, steel, and wood. English sentences are built in a similar way. Every word in a sentence belongs to a category, or a 'part of speech', based on its job. While you learned the basics of these jobs in earlier grades, we will now review all eight parts of speech together. This unified view is the first step toward mastery. It allows you to understand how words work together to create meaning, and it provides the essential vocabulary for all grammar study from this point forward.

A part of speech is a category for a word. The category is decided by the job the word does in a sentence.
