Think about a noun like 'dog'. It's a general idea. But when you say 'the dog', 'a dog', or 'my dog', you're giving your listener or reader important information about which dog you mean, how many there are, or whose it is. The small words doing this important job are called determiners. They are the first signal that a noun is coming.
