Telling Someone What Someone Else Said

Imagine you're telling a friend about a conversation you had. You don't want to quote every single word. Instead, you 'report' what was said. 'He said that he was tired.' This is reported speech. It requires a number of grammatical 'shifts' to accurately convey a message from the past.
