Describing Words — Adjectives
What Is an Adjective?
Look at a cat. Now look at a black cat. The word "black" tells you more about the cat. Words that describe nouns — that tell us what something is like — are called adjectives. Adjectives add colour, size, shape, and quality to the nouns they describe.
Student-Friendly Definition: An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells us more about a person, place, animal, or thing.
Colour, Size, Shape, Number, and Quality Adjectives
Adjectives help us describe the world in detail. They tell us about the colour of things, the size of things, the shape of things, how many things there are, and what things are like. Learning different types of adjectives helps you describe everything around you more precisely.
Student-Friendly Definition: Adjectives can describe five main things: colour (what colour), size (how big), shape (what shape), number (how many), and quality (what it is like).
