โถ Play Door 9Repeating Patterns
A pattern is something that repeats in the same order.
Shape pattern: circle, square, circle, square, circle... next is SQUARE.
The repeating part is called the CORE of the pattern.
Worked example
Problem: What comes next: star, moon, star, moon, star, ?
- The core is star-moon.
- After star comes moon.
Answer: moon
Number Patterns
Numbers can make patterns too!
Adding 2 each time: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ...
Adding 5 each time: 5, 10, 15, 20 ...
Find the jump between numbers to find the rule.
Worked example
Problem: What comes next: 3, 6, 9, 12, ?
- The jump is +3 each time.
- 12 + 3 = 15.
Answer: 15
Completing and Creating Patterns
To complete a pattern, find the rule first.
A, B, A, B, A, ? The rule is A then B, so next is B.
You can create your own patterns with colours, claps, shapes and numbers!
Worked example
Problem: Fill the blank: 10, 20, 30, ?, 50
- The rule is +10.
- 30 + 10 = 40.
Answer: 40
