Advanced Addition

Addition is the mathematical operation of combining two or more numbers together into a single total called the sum. In Grade 2, we advance from basic counting to exploring properties of larger numbers, aligning values structurally, and managing place value changes!
β€’ Addition Facts up to 20 Fluently: Knowing mental math pairs automatically (like 8 + 7 = 15 or 9 + 9 = 18) without needing to count on your fingers.
β€’ Adding Single-Digits to 2-Digit & 3-Digit Numbers: Adding a small value directly to a larger number by tracking the Ones column (e.g., 142 + 6 = 148).
β€’ Adding Two 2-Digit Numbers (Without Regrouping): Combining numbers where the sum of the digits in each column stays below 10 (e.g., 43 + 25 = 68).
β€’ Adding Two 2-Digit Numbers (With Regrouping / Carrying Over): When the digits in the Ones column add up to 10 or more, you must bundle 10 ones together to…

Worked example

Problem: Solve the following vertical expression: 58 + 24.

  1. Align the numbers into Tens (T) and Ones (O) columns.
  2. Add the digits in the Ones column first:
  3. Because 12 is greater than 9, we must regroup. Leave the 2 in the Ones column answer space, and carry the 1 ten over to the top of the Tens column.
  4. Add all the digits in the Tens column together, including the carried-over 1:
  5. Combine the column answers to find the final total: 82.

Answer: 82
