Multiplication is a fast and powerful way to count equal groups of items! Instead of counting objects one by one, multiplication allows us to jump ahead in equal steps to find the total sum quickly.
β’ Understanding Multiplication as Repeated Addition: When you add the exact same number over and over again, you are multiplying. For example, if you have three baskets and each basket has 5 apples, you can add 5 + 5 + 5 = 15. In multiplication, we write this shorter as 3 Γ 5 = 15 (3 groups of 5).
β’ Grouping Equal Sets of Objects: Multiplication only works when every single group has the exact same number of items. If one group is different, you cannot use multiplication.
β’ Modeling Multiplication on a Number Line: You can visualize multiplication as frog hops! To show 4 Γ 2, a frog starts at 0 and makes 4 equal hops of 2 spaces each, landing exactly on 8.

Worked example
Problem: Look at the following repeated addition sentence and convert it into a standard multiplication expression: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5.
- Identify the number that is being repeated: The number is 5.
- Count how many times that number is added: It appears 4 times.
- Set up the multiplication format (How many times Γ The repeated number):
- Calculate the total sum by skip counting by 5s four times (5, 10, 15, 20):
Answer: 4 Γ 5 = 20
