Welcome to the world of fractions! So far, we have looked at whole numbers (like 1, 2, and 5). But sometimes, we need to talk about numbers that are smaller than a single whole thing. A fraction represents a small slice or part of a whole item.
• Whole vs. Part Concept: * A Whole is an entire object, shape, or collection that is completely unbroken and uncut (like a whole round pizza or an entire candy bar).
• A Part is a smaller piece or section that has been sliced or separated from the whole.
• Equal vs. Unequal Parts: Fractions only exist when a whole is cut into equal parts.
• Equal Parts: Slices that are exactly the same size and shape.
• Unequal Parts: Slices that are different sizes. If a sibling gets a giant piece of cake and you get a tiny crumb, that is unfair because the parts are unequal! We cannot use mathematical fractions for unequal parts.

Worked example
Problem: A standard circle is divided into 3 completely equal, matching wedges. One of the wedges is colored bright blue. Write down the mathematical fraction that represents the blue part of the circle.
- Count the total number of equal sections the whole circle is cut into: There are 3 equal sections. This value goes on the bottom of the fraction line.
- Count how many sections are colored blue: Only 1 section is blue. This value goes on the top of the fraction line.
- Stack the two values together with a fraction bar:
Answer: 1/3 (One-third)
