Weight and mass tell us how heavy or light an object is. When you pick up a heavy school bag and a light pencil, your hands instantly feel the difference. In Grade 2, we learn how to test weights using balance scales, discover standard metric measurement tools, and solve real-world mass stories!
β’ Comparing Weights Using Interactive Balance Scale Buckets: A balance scale has two hanging buckets. It is a fantastic visual way to compare weights without numbers:
β’ If both buckets hang completely flat in a straight line, the objects weigh the exact same amount (Balanced).
β’ If you place a heavy object in one bucket, that side will sink down, causing the lighter bucket to tip way up into the air!

Worked example
Problem: An inventory manager tracks items in a grocery store. Help them pick the best standard metric weight unit (g or kg) to measure: (a) A single dry leaf, and (b) A heavy sack of potatoes.
- Analyze item (a): A single dry leaf is incredibly light and can easily blow away in a gentle breeze. It matches our lightweight paperclip benchmark. Therefore, choose Grams (g).
- Analyze item (b): A sack of potatoes is large, bulky, and difficult to lift with one finger. It matches our heavyweight bottle or textbook benchmarks. Therefore, choose Kilograms (kg).
