Every digit inside a three-digit number has a specific "home" that determines how much it is actually worth. Understanding how numbers are built helps us look inside them, break them apart, and compare them easily.
β’ Understanding Hundreds, Tens, and Ones (HTO): A three-digit number is arranged into three structural columns. From left to right, these are the Hundreds column, the Tens column, and the Ones column.
β’ Value vs. Face Value: * Face Value: This is simply the digit itself (0 to 9). It never changes, no matter where it sits.
β’ Place Value: This is the actual mathematical worth of the digit based on its position in the HTO columns. For example, in the number 725, the face value of the first digit is just 7, but its place value is 7 hundreds (or 700).

Worked example
Problem: Find the face value and the place value of the underlined digit in this number: 479.
- Identify the face value: The digit itself is 7, so the face value is simply 7.
- Identify its column position: Write the number under an HTO chart. The 4 is under Hundreds, the 7 is under Tens, and the 9 is under Ones.
- Calculate the place value: Since 7 sits in the tens column, it represents 7 tens.
Answer: Face Value = 7, Place Value = 70
