๐ Area (Counting Squares)
Area = number of unit squares inside a shape
โถ Play Door 14Measure Area by Counting Unit Squares
Area is the amount of flat surface inside a shape, measured in square units (e.g., cmยฒ, mยฒ).
To find area:
โข Count the unit squares that fit inside the shape
โข For rectangles: Area = Length x Width
Worked example
Problem: Rectangle 4 cm x 3 cm. Find the area.
- Area = 4 x 3 = 12 cmยฒ.
- Count: 4 columns x 3 rows = 12 unit squares.
Answer: Count: 4 columns x 3 rows = 12 unit squares.
Compare Area of Two Shapes
To compare areas:
โข Calculate each shape's area using Length x Width (or count squares)
โข Compare the numbers
โข Larger area = more space inside
Two shapes with the same area can look very different!
Worked example
Problem: Which has larger area: a 3x5 rectangle or a 4x4 square?
- Rectangle: 3x5=15 cmยฒ.
- Square: 4x4=16 cmยฒ.
- 16 > 15, so the square has larger area.
Answer: 16 > 15, so the square has larger area.
