Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones

In a 4-digit number we have four place values:
• Thousands = groups of 1,000
• Hundreds = groups of 100
• Tens = groups of 10
• Ones = leftover units

Example: 3,527 = 3 thousands + 5 hundreds + 2 tens + 7 ones

Worked example

Problem: How many thousands are in 8,492?

  1. The digit in the thousands place is 8.
  2. So there are 8 thousands = 8,000.

Answer: So there are 8 thousands = 8,000.

Rounding to Nearest 10, 100, 1000

Rounding rules:
• Identify the place you are rounding to
• Look at the digit one place to the right
• If it is 0-4, round down (keep the digit, change rest to 0)
• If it is 5-9, round up (increase the digit by 1, change rest to 0)

Worked example

Problem: Round 4,783 to the nearest 10.

  1. Look at ones digit: 3.
  2. Since 3 < 5, round down.

Answer: 4,780.

Comparing and Ordering 4-Digit Numbers

Compare 4-digit numbers starting from the leftmost digit:
• Compare thousands first
• If equal, compare hundreds
• If equal, compare tens
• If equal, compare ones

Use symbols: < (less than), > (greater than), = (equal to)

Worked example

Problem: Compare: 5,432 ___ 5,429

  1. Thousands: both 5.
  2. Hundreds: both 4.
  3. Tens: both 2.
  4. Ones: 2 vs 9.
  5. Since 2 5,429.

Answer: Since 2 5,429.
