In a scaled bar graph, each unit of bar height (or each picture symbol) represents more than one item โ such as 2, 5, or 10.
To read: bar value = bar height x scale
Always read the key or label to know the scale.
Worked example
Problem: Scale is 1 symbol = 5 children. There are 3 symbols. How many children?
- 3 x 5 = 15 children.
Answer: 3 x 5 = 15 children.
Line Plots with Fractional Units
A line plot is a graph that shows data points along a number line. Each X represents one data value.
Fractional line plots use number lines with fractions (like 0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1).
To read: count the X marks above each value.
Worked example
Problem: Plot: 2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 1/4, 2 3/4. How many X marks at 2 1/4?
- 2 leaves were 2 1/4 inches.
- 2 X marks at 2 1/4.
Answer: 2 X marks at 2 1/4.
