โถ Play Door 9Solving Addition & Subtraction Equations
What is an Equation?
An equation is a mathematical sentence that shows two expressions are equal. It has an equals sign (=).
What does "Solving" mean?
Solving means finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true.
Inverse Operations:

Worked example
Problem: Solve: x + 8 = 15
- To isolate x, subtract 8 from both sides
- x + 8 - 8 = 15 - 8
- x = 7
- Answer: x = 7
Answer: Answer: x = 7
Solving Multiplication & Division Equations
Multiplication Equations:
To solve 3z = 18, divide both sides by 3.
3z = 18
3z รท 3 = 18 รท 3
z = 6Division Equations:
To solve m/2 = 7, multiply both sides by 2.
m/2 = 7
m/2 ร 2 = 7 ร 2
m = 14
Worked example
Problem: Solve: 3z = 18
- Divide both sides by 3
- 3z รท 3 = 18 รท 3
- z = 6
- Answer: z = 6
Answer: Answer: z = 6
Checking Solutions by Substitution
Why Check Your Answer?
Substituting your solution back into the original equation verifies that you solved correctly!
Steps to Check:
โข Take the original equation
โข Replace the variable with your solution
โข Calculate both sides
โข If both sides are equal, your solution is correct!
Example: Solve x + 8 = 15 โ x = 7
Check:
โข Original: x + 8 = 15
โข Substitute x=7: 7 + 8 = 15
โข 15 = 15 โ Correct!
Worked example
Problem: Solve and check: x + 12 = 30
- Solve: x = 30 - 12 = 18
- Check: 18 + 12 = 30 โ
- Answer: x = 18
Answer: Answer: x = 18
