Always start with the BIGGER number and count up.
3 + 9? Flip it! Start at 9 and count 3 more: 10, 11, 12.
This saves time and energy!
Worked example
Problem: Use counting on: 2 + 8 = ?
- Start with the bigger number: 8.
- Count on 2: 9, 10.
Answer: 10
Making Ten
Ten is a friendly number!
To add 8 + 5: take 2 from the 5 to make 8 into 10.
Then 10 + 3 = 13. Easy!
Pairs that make ten: 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5.
Worked example
Problem: Use make ten: 7 + 5 = ?
- 7 needs 3 to make 10.
- Take 3 from 5, leaving 2.
- 10 + 2 = 12.
Answer: 12
Doubles and Near Doubles
Doubles: 4 + 4 = 8, 6 + 6 = 12, 9 + 9 = 18. Memorise them!
Near doubles: 6 + 7 is just double 6 plus 1 more.
6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 = 13.
Worked example
Problem: Use near doubles: 5 + 6 = ?
- Double 5 is 10.
- Add 1 more: 11.
Answer: 11
