Addition means putting things together to find the total.
The symbol is + (plus). The answer is called the SUM.
3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples, so 3 + 2 = 5.
Worked example
Problem: Add using pictures: 4 + 3 = ?
- Draw 4 circles: O O O O
- Draw 3 more: O O O
- Count all: 7 circles.
Answer: 7
Adding on a Number Line
Start at the first number.
Jump forward as many steps as the second number.
Where you land is the sum!
To add 4 + 3: start at 4, jump 3 steps: 5, 6, 7. So 4 + 3 = 7.
Worked example
Problem: Use the number line: 5 + 2 = ?
- Start at 5.
- Jump 2 steps: 6, 7.
- You land on 7.
Answer: 7
Addition Within 20
Count on from the BIGGER number.
8 + 3: say 8, then count 9, 10, 11. So 8 + 3 = 11.
Doubles are fast: 6 + 6 = 12, 7 + 7 = 14.
Worked example
Problem: Add using count on: 9 + 6 = ?
- Start with the bigger number: 9.
- Count on 6 more: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.
Answer: 15
Two-Digit Addition (No Regrouping)
Add the ONES first, then the TENS.
23 + 14: ones are 3 + 4 = 7, tens are 2 + 1 = 3. Answer 37.
42 + 5: ones are 2 + 5 = 7, tens stay 4. Answer 47.
Worked example
Problem: Add: 32 + 46 = ?
- Ones: 2 + 6 = 8.
- Tens: 3 + 4 = 7.
- Answer: 78.
