Circle, Triangle and Square

A CIRCLE is perfectly round with no corners and no sides.
A TRIANGLE has 3 sides and 3 corners.
A SQUARE has 4 equal sides and 4 corners.
Wheels are circles, samosas are triangles, carrom boards are squares!

Worked example

Problem: How many corners does a triangle have?

  1. A triangle has 3 sides.
  2. Where two sides meet is a corner.
  3. It has 3 corners.

Answer: 3

Rectangle, Oval and Hexagon

A RECTANGLE has 4 sides: 2 long and 2 short, with 4 corners.
An OVAL is like a stretched circle, egg-shaped, no corners.
A HEXAGON has 6 sides, like a honeycomb cell.
Doors and books are rectangles!

Worked example

Problem: How many sides does a hexagon have?

  1. Hexa means six.
  2. A hexagon has 6 sides.

Answer: 6

Spotting Shapes Around You

Shapes are everywhere!
Clock face: circle. Window: square or rectangle.
Road sign: triangle. Egg: oval.
Count the SIDES and CORNERS to name any shape.

Worked example

Problem: A shape has 4 equal sides. What shape is it?

  1. 4 sides means square or rectangle.
  2. All sides EQUAL means it is a square.

Answer: square
