Solid shapes are 3D: you can hold them!
A CUBE has 6 square faces, like a dice.
A CUBOID is like a stretched cube, like a brick or a pencil box.
Both have 6 faces, 8 corners and 12 edges.
Worked example
Problem: How many faces does a cube have?
- Count the faces of a dice: top, bottom, front, back, left, right.
- That is 6 faces.
Answer: 6
Sphere and Cylinder
A SPHERE is a perfectly round ball. It can roll in any direction!
A CYLINDER has 2 flat circle faces and 1 curved face, like a can or a glass.
A sphere has NO flat face at all.
Worked example
Problem: Which solid shape is a football?
- A football is round like a ball.
- A round ball is a sphere.
Answer: sphere
Cone and Real-Life Objects
A CONE has 1 flat circle face and a pointy top, like an ice-cream cone or a birthday cap.
Real life solids:
Dice: cube. Brick: cuboid. Ball: sphere. Can: cylinder. Ice-cream cone: cone!
Worked example
Problem: A birthday cap is which solid shape?
- It has a circle at the bottom and a point on top.
- That is a cone.
Answer: cone
