Numbers go in order: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... all the way to 100.
Every number is exactly 1 more than the number before it.
After 9 comes 10. After 19 comes 20. After 99 comes 100!
Worked example
Problem: What number comes just after 39?
- Say the numbers in order: 37, 38, 39 ...
- One more than 39 is 40.
Answer: 40
Forward and Backward Counting
Forward counting goes UP: 5, 6, 7, 8 ...
Backward counting goes DOWN: 8, 7, 6, 5 ...
When you count backward, each number is 1 less than the one before.
Worked example
Problem: Count backward from 12: 12, 11, 10, ?
- Each step takes away 1.
- 10 take away 1 is 9.
Answer: 9
Skip Counting by 2s, 5s and 10s
Skip counting means jumping over numbers.
By 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 ...
By 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ...
By 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ...
Worked example
Problem: Skip count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, ?
- Each jump adds 5.
- 15 plus 5 is 20.
Answer: 20
Counting Objects
To count objects, touch each one once and say the next number.
The LAST number you say tells you how many there are in all.
Counting helps in real life: counting toys, steps, fruits and friends!
Worked example
Problem: Ria counts her crayons: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. How many crayons does she have?
- The last number said is 7.
- So there are 7 crayons.
Answer: 7
