Reading and Writing Numbers 1 to 100

Every number has a name.
1 is one, 2 is two, 3 is three, 4 is four, 5 is five.
6 is six, 7 is seven, 8 is eight, 9 is nine, 10 is ten.
11 is eleven, 12 is twelve, 20 is twenty, 50 is fifty, 100 is one hundred.

Worked example

Problem: Write the number for the name 'fifteen'.

  1. Fifteen is 5 more than ten.
  2. We write it as 15.

Answer: 15

Matching Numbers with Objects

A number tells us HOW MANY objects there are.
If you see 4 balls, the number is 4.
We can also put numbers in order from smallest to biggest: 3, 5, 8, 12.

Worked example

Problem: Tia has these balloons: O O O O O O. Which number matches?

  1. Count the balloons: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
  2. The number is 6.

Answer: 6

Before, After and Between

BEFORE means 1 less: the number before 7 is 6.
AFTER means 1 more: the number after 7 is 8.
BETWEEN means in the middle: 7 is between 6 and 8.

Worked example

Problem: Which number is between 24 and 26?

  1. Count in order: 24, 25, 26.
  2. The middle number is 25.

Answer: 25
