Left, Right, Up and Down

LEFT and RIGHT are your two sides. Most people write with the right hand.
UP means towards the sky. DOWN means towards the ground.
A bird flies UP. A ball falls DOWN.

Worked example

Problem: The sun rises and moves which way: up or down?

  1. In the morning the sun climbs into the sky.
  2. It moves up.

Answer: up

Inside, Outside, Near and Far

INSIDE means within: the toy is inside the box.
OUTSIDE means not within: the dog is outside the house.
NEAR means close by. FAR means a long way away.
TOP is the highest part. BOTTOM is the lowest part.

Worked example

Problem: The cap is on your head. Is it at the top or bottom of your body?

  1. Your head is the highest part.
  2. So the cap is at the top.

Answer: top

Before, After and Moving

BEFORE means earlier or in front in a line.
AFTER means later or behind in a line.
Directions tell us how to move: 2 steps forward, turn left, 3 steps ahead!

Worked example

Problem: In the word SUN, which letter comes after S?

  1. S is first, U is next.
  2. U comes after S.

Answer: U
