Heavy and Light

HEAVY things are hard to lift: an elephant, a fridge, a bag of rice.
LIGHT things are easy to lift: a feather, a leaf, a balloon.
Big does not always mean heavy: a big balloon is lighter than a small stone!

Worked example

Problem: Which is heavier: an elephant or a rabbit?

  1. An elephant is one of the heaviest animals.
  2. A rabbit is small and light.
  3. The elephant is heavier.

Answer: elephant

Comparing Weights

A BALANCE SCALE compares weights.
The heavier side goes DOWN. The lighter side goes UP.
If both sides stay level, the weights are EQUAL.

Worked example

Problem: On a balance, the apple side goes down and the grape side goes up. Which is heavier?

  1. The heavier side goes down.
  2. The apple side went down, so the apple is heavier.

Answer: apple

Everyday Weighing

Shopkeepers weigh fruits and vegetables every day.
We can also compare with blocks: a toy weighing 6 blocks is heavier than one weighing 4 blocks.
Later you will learn kilograms (kg), the standard unit of weight!

Worked example

Problem: A toy car weighs 5 blocks. A doll weighs 8 blocks. Which is heavier?

  1. Compare: 8 blocks is more than 5 blocks.
  2. The doll is heavier.

Answer: doll
