CAPACITY is how much a container can hold.
FULL means it cannot hold any more: a full glass of milk.
EMPTY means nothing inside: an empty bottle.
HALF-FULL means filled up to the middle.
Worked example
Problem: A glass of water is filled to the middle. Is it full, empty or half-full?
- Water reaches the middle only.
- So it is half-full.
Answer: half-full
Which Holds More?
Big containers hold MORE. Small containers hold LESS.
A bucket holds more than a mug.
A spoon holds less than a cup.
We can check by counting how many cups fill each container!
Worked example
Problem: Which holds more water: a bucket or a mug?
- A bucket is much bigger than a mug.
- The bucket holds more.
Answer: bucket
Introduction to Litres
The LITRE (L) is the standard unit of capacity.
Milk packets and water bottles are measured in litres.
A big water bottle holds 1 litre. A bucket holds about 10 litres!
Worked example
Problem: A jug holds 2 litres. Another jug holds 3 litres. How many litres do both hold together?
- Add: 2 + 3 = 5.
- Both hold 5 litres together.
Answer: 5
