Reading and Writing 6-Digit Numbers

In the Indian Number System, a 6-digit number uses places up to Lakhs. Each digit gets its value from the place it occupies.
โ€ข Lakhs (L) = 1,00,000
โ€ข Ten Thousands (TTh) = 10,000
โ€ข Thousands (Th) = 1,000
โ€ข Hundreds (H) = 100
โ€ข Tens (T) = 10
โ€ข Ones (O) = 1

To read a 6-digit number like 4,53,248: say the Lakhs digit first, then the Thousands group, then the last three digits. Answer: Four lakh fifty-three thousand two hundred forty-eight.
Always place commas: first comma after hundreds, second comma after thousands โ€” e.g. 7,84,345.

Worked example

Problem: Write 'Seven lakh eighty-four thousand three hundred fifteen' in figures.

  1. Seven lakh = 7,00,000.
  2. Eighty-four thousand = 84,000.
  3. Three hundred fifteen = 315.
  4. Combine: 7,00,000 + 84,000 + 315 = 7,84,315.

Answer: Combine: 7,00,000 + 84,000 + 315 = 7,84,315.

Rounding to Nearest 10,000 and Nearest Lakh

Rounding makes large numbers easier to work with. We round to the nearest ten thousand or nearest lakh.
Rounding Rules:
โ€ข Identify the place you are rounding to
โ€ข Look at the digit immediately to its right
โ€ข If that digit is 5 or more โ€” Round Up (increase by 1)
โ€ข If that digit is 4 or less โ€” Round Down (keep same)
โ€ข Replace all digits to the right of the target place with zeros

Memory tip: 5 or more, let it soar! 4 or less, let it rest!

Worked example

Problem: Round 3,47,682 to the nearest 10,000.

  1. The ten-thousands digit is 4.
  2. Look at the thousands digit: 7.
  3. Since 7 >= 5, round up.
  4. The 4 becomes 5, all digits to its right become 0.

Answer: 3,50,000.

Comparing Multi-Digit Numbers

To compare numbers with up to 6 digits, compare digit by digit from left to right, starting with the highest place value.
Strategy:
โ€ข Count the digits โ€” more digits = bigger number
โ€ข If same number of digits, compare the Lakhs place first
โ€ข If Lakhs are equal, compare Ten Thousands, and so on
โ€ข The first place where digits differ decides which number is greater

Use symbols: > (greater than), < (less than), = (equal to)
On a number line, numbers to the right are always greater.

Worked example

Problem: Compare: 7,45,632 and 7,45,362.

  1. Both 6-digit.
  2. Lakhs both 7 (same).
  3. TTh both 4 (same).
  4. Th both 5 (same).
  5. Hundreds: 6 vs 3.

Answer: Hundreds: 6 vs 3.
