Large numbers are grouped to make them easy to read. In the Indian system we use lakhs and crores: 1 lakh = 1,00,000 and 1 crore = 1,00,00,000. In the international system we use the million: 1 million = 1,000,000.
Each digit has a place value. In 3,45,678 the 3 is in the lakhs place (3,00,000).
Worked example
Problem: Write 1 lakh in digits.
- 1,00,000 (a 1 followed by five zeros).
Answer: 1,00,000 (a 1 followed by five zeros).
Comparing & Rounding Large Numbers
Compare large numbers by digit count first, then from the left. To round, look at the digit to the right of the rounding place: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down.
Worked example
Problem: Round 47,800 to the nearest thousand.
- Hundreds digit 8 → round up to 48,000.
Answer: Hundreds digit 8 → round up to 48,000.
