Solving Two-Step Equations

Two-step equations require two inverse operations to isolate the variable. The general form is ax + b = c.
Steps to solve:
โ€ข Add or subtract to move the constant term to the other side
โ€ข Multiply or divide to isolate the variable
โ€ข Check by substituting your answer back into the original equation

Example: 2x + 3 = 11
Step 1: Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x = 8
Step 2: Divide both sides by 2: x = 4
Key rule: Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side.

Worked example

Problem: Solve: 3x - 7 = 14

  1. 3x - 7 + 7 = 14 + 7 => 3x = 21 => x = 7.
  2. Check: 3(7)-7 = 14.
  3. Correct!

Answer: Correct!
