1st Ordinal Numbers

First to Tenth

Ordinal numbers tell POSITION, not how many.
1st first, 2nd second, 3rd third, 4th fourth, 5th fifth.
6th sixth, 7th seventh, 8th eighth, 9th ninth, 10th tenth.
In a race, the winner is FIRST!

Worked example

Problem: Five friends stand in a line: Anu, Ben, Chetan, Dia, Esha. Who is 3rd?

  1. Count positions: Anu is 1st, Ben is 2nd, Chetan is 3rd.
  2. So Chetan is third.

Answer: Chetan

Position Words

Ordinal numbers help us describe where things are.
The 1st letter of CAT is C. The 2nd is A. The 3rd is T.
We count positions from the start, one by one.

Worked example

Problem: What is the 4th letter of the word TIGER?

  1. T is 1st, I is 2nd, G is 3rd, E is 4th.
  2. The 4th letter is E.

Answer: E

Ordinals in Everyday Life

We use ordinals every day!
Monday is the 1st working day of the week.
January is the 1st month of the year.
Your class position, floor numbers and race results all use ordinals.

Worked example

Problem: March is which month of the year? (type the number)

  1. January is 1st, February is 2nd, March is 3rd.
  2. March is the 3rd month.

Answer: 3
