Sorting and Classifying

SORTING means putting similar things together.
Sort toys by colour: red ones together, blue ones together.
Sort blocks by shape: circles in one group, squares in another.
Sorting makes counting easy!

Worked example

Problem: You have 3 red balls and 2 blue balls. How many groups do you make when sorting by colour?

  1. Colours here: red and blue.
  2. That makes 2 groups.

Answer: 2

Tally Marks

Tally marks are quick counting lines.
One mark | for each thing: ||| means 3.
The 5th mark crosses the four: like a gate. So a full gate = 5.
A gate plus 2 marks means 5 + 2 = 7.

Worked example

Problem: What number is one full tally gate plus 3 marks?

  1. A full gate is 5.
  2. 5 + 3 = 8.

Answer: 8

Picture Graphs

A PICTURE GRAPH shows information with pictures.
Each picture stands for 1 thing.
Fruit liked by kids: apple has 4 pictures, banana has 6 pictures.
Banana is liked by MORE kids because 6 is more than 4!

Worked example

Problem: In a picture graph, dogs have 5 pictures and cats have 3. How many more kids like dogs?

  1. Compare: 5 - 3 = 2.
  2. 2 more kids like dogs.

Answer: 2
