Indian money is the RUPEE.
Coins: 1 rupee, 2 rupees, 5 rupees, 10 rupees, 20 rupees.
Notes: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 rupees.
The symbol for rupee is Rs (or the rupee sign).
Worked example
Problem: Which is worth more: a 5 rupee coin or a 10 rupee coin?
- Compare the numbers: 10 is more than 5.
- The 10 rupee coin is worth more.
Answer: 10
Counting Money
To count money, ADD the values.
A 5 rupee coin and a 2 rupee coin make 5 + 2 = 7 rupees.
Two 10 rupee notes make 10 + 10 = 20 rupees.
Worked example
Problem: You have a 10 rupee note and a 5 rupee coin. How much money in all?
- Add the values: 10 + 5 = 15.
- You have 15 rupees.
Answer: 15
Simple Buying
When you buy something, you pay its PRICE.
If you give more money than the price, you get CHANGE back.
A toffee costs 2 rupees. You give 5 rupees. Change: 5 - 2 = 3 rupees.
Worked example
Problem: A pencil costs 4 rupees. You pay with a 10 rupee note. How much change do you get?
- Change = money given - price.
- 10 - 4 = 6 rupees.
Answer: 6
