Ones and Tens

Numbers are made of ONES and TENS.
10 ones make 1 ten.
In the number 34: the 3 means 3 tens (30) and the 4 means 4 ones.
So 34 = 30 + 4.

Worked example

Problem: How many tens are in 52?

  1. 52 = 50 + 2.
  2. 50 is 5 tens.
  3. So there are 5 tens.

Answer: 5

Expanded Form

Expanded form breaks a number into tens and ones.
47 = 40 + 7
83 = 80 + 3
It shows the VALUE of each digit.

Worked example

Problem: What is 60 + 5?

  1. 60 is 6 tens, 5 is 5 ones.
  2. Together they make 65.

Answer: 65

Comparing Numbers

To compare two-digit numbers, look at the TENS first.
More tens means the bigger number: 52 is bigger than 38.
If tens are equal, compare the ones: 46 is bigger than 43.
Signs: > greater than, < less than, = equal to.

Worked example

Problem: Which is bigger: 29 or 41?

  1. 29 has 2 tens. 41 has 4 tens.
  2. 4 tens is more than 2 tens.
  3. So 41 is bigger.

Answer: 41
